Dk : Permeablilitas Oksigen Lensa kontak adalah penghalang (barrier) yang dapat mengurangi sejumlah oksigen untuk mencapai kornea. Tingkat permeabilitas oksigen menjadi indikator pengukuran penghalang ini; semakin tinggi nilai indikator ini maka semakin banyak oksigen yang mampu mencapai kornea. “Permeabilitas Oksigen” adalah nilai difusi/penyebaran (D) dari oksigen melalui lensa dikalikan dengan solubilitas/ kelarutan (k). Oleh karena itu, tingkat permeabilitas oksigen ditentukan dari “bahan material” lensa, tidak ada kaitannya dengan bentuk maupun desain lekukan pada lensa.
Lensa hidrogel mengangkut oksigen melalui air di dalam lensa, oleh karena itu, berkadar air tinggi menandakan tingkat permeabilitas oksigen juga tinggi. Bahkan ketika kadar air dalam lensa mencapai 99%, permeabilitas oksigen tidak akan melebihi nilai teoritis yakni 40. Sedangkan lensa silikon hidrogel, meskipun mengandung air, oksigen tidak diangkut oleh air melainkan polimer yang terdiri dari rantai molekul silikon yang mengantar oksigen. Nilai teoritis tingkat permeabilitas oksigen dari molekul silikon mampu mencapai lebih dari 100, maka dari itu permeabilitas oksigen lensa silikon hidrogel lebih tinggi daripada lensa hidrogel yang mengandalkan air untuk mengangkut oksigen.
Dk/t : Transmisibilitas Oksigen Dibandingkan dengan permeabilitas oksigen, transmisibilitas oksigen mempertimbangkan nilai “t” (ketebalan pada lensa), menandakan bahwa transmisi oksigen berhubungan dengan ketebalan, bahan material yang digunakan dan desain geometris pada lensa. Nilai ketebalannya adalah pengukuran rata-rata pada zona optik bagian sentral yang tertipis. Tetapi dikarenakan ketebalan lensa memiliki daya kekuatan yang berbeda, maka kami menggunakan -3.00 sebagai standar referensi. (Zona optik pusat ketebalan lensa kontak berada di antara 0.07 ~ 0.10 mm)
Idealnya, jika mendesain ukuran lensa yang super tipis, transmisibilitas oksigennya dapat dioptimalkan meskipun bahan material yang digunakan dengan tingkat permeabilitas oksigen rendah. Bagaimanapun juga, jika mempertimbangkan faktorfaktor seperti karakteristik optik, karakteristik fisik dan tingkat hasil dan fungsi kegunaan, semakin tipis lensanya maka semakin banyak masalah yang terjadi.
